Beach Replenishment

McCallum Bros Ltd is the leading supplier of Beach Replenishment Sand to beach restoration projects in the Auckland region.

Changes in the coastal structures and prevailing weather conditions have lead to the depletion of sand from many popular beaches. In many cases, increased stormwater runoff from urbanised suburbs has resulted in the original sand being washed offshore and thus lost to the beach.

The replenishment projects have involved the establishment of artificial concrete reefs (groynes) along the beach to restrict sand movement during storm events and the diversion of stormwater outlets to the extreme ends where the discharge will not wash the sand offshore.

McCallum Bros Ltd supply D50 Beach Replenishment Sand is taken from deep water deposits and is then transferred to the affected beach via road (by truck and trailer) or via sea (from pumping barge or barge and excavator).

The vessel Coastal Carrier is anchored in the bay beside Kaipara Ltd.'s pumping barge (top centre of picture). The sand pumped ashore to date can be seen near the left of the photograph (around 25% of the final volume).
St Helier's before Replenishment
The beach as it was before replenishment. Increased urbanised stormwater runoff was primarily responsible for the diminishing volume of sand on the beach.
St Heliers beach replenishment
Kaipara Ltd. was responsible for pumping the sand ashore from the dredger, placing it on the foreshore and other related engineering projects to complete the beach restoration.
Excavator distributing sand
Kaipara Ltd. used an excavator to distribute the sand evenly along the beach after it has been pumped ashore from the barge.

Restoration of St Helier's beach was completed in October 2006, many months ahead of schedule. Nearly 35,000 m³ was placed on the beach from a deep-water source 2 km offshore in the Pakiri Embayment.
