Adding shell to concrete can give the finished surface added interest or lighten the established surface. Shell concrete can also be used to help give a maritime or seashore atmosphere. Our 5-13 grade shell is normally added to the concrete mix. Because of its size in the mix the shell migrates to the surface during screeding. If greater impact from the shell is desired larger shell can be applied to the surface of the wet concrete and then set in place through screeding. Shell can be combined with a variety of aggregates and other materials including McCallum's red stone, other coloured stone or pebble and glass products to produce the desired effect. Tough and attractive, McCallum's shell is sourced from legally consented and renewable dead shell deposits from the seafloor and includes cockle, scallop and whelk shells. Many of the shells retain their natural colours (reds, oranges, mauves) and are stronger and more durable compared to shell sourced from older deposits. |
